Johanna’s Maternity Portraits | Benicia Studio

We first met Johanna during E.J. and Beverly’s wedding a few months ago as she was one of the bridesmaids. She and Gene are expecting their first baby come September and they wanted to take a few maternity portraits before baby Olivia arrived. (Ironically, we’re naming our little girl Olivia too!) Here are just a few from the session taken at our Benicia studio.

Deana's Maternity Session

Aside from shooting weddings, I (Madelynn) favorite thing I love to shoot is maternity sessions. As a mother of three, I loved the feeling of being pregnant. There is something so amazing and unparalleled, something so unexplainable that no one could ever put into words on how to describe it. As a mother, I understand the extraordinary changes a woman’s body goes through to birth a child so I appreciate the beauty and “glow” that pregnant women have and that is what I love capture.

Waiting for Kingston! That is the name of my Godson and we were honored when proud anxious parents, Erik & Deana asked us to photograph this stage in their life. Deana was a natural when it came time to take the photos. I barely had to pose her. We took several series of shots, some indoor and some outdoor. My favorite is her in the white. She just looked like a Goddess to me, embodying natural unfiltered beauty. I didn’t even have to Photoshop anything away from her. She had no stretch marks whatsoever! So lucky (and lucky for us too. We didn’t have to do too much work!)

Brandi & Richard's Maternity Session

Brandi and Richard are expecting their first baby in June. The first thing I noticed was how tiny she was! We took these at our studio in the Historic Arsenal Park building in Benicia, CA. They were such a fun couple to shoot! These two met in Barcelona while Brandi was out there studying abroad. Richard, originally from Nigeria, was living there at the time. One thing that we loved about this shoot was Richard helped Brandi a lot with posing and it overall helped her relax. That, in itself, is really important during a shoot, especially when it comes to maternity sessions. Being comfortable is key to getting “the” shot.

First off, I want to congratulate Mariela and DJ! I was super excited to photograph their maternity session! I have always admired these two as a couple. If you meet them first hand you can instantly tell how perfect they are for each other and from the stories they tell you, you almost get envious of how much fun they have together. From trips around the world to camping in Yosemite, celebrating Oktoberfest or nursing black widow spider bites, they are, in my opinion, one bomb *ss couple. As for Mommy-to-be, she’s one of those women who make pregnancy “sexy”. Here are a few frames of the session. Enjoy!

I just wanted to put a disclaimer on here. . . I did not even have to retouch her belly at all! This woman has flawless skin! I know, right? Makes you hate her just a little. . .

You will rarely see them this serious since they’re always laughing. But I thought this was a pretty intimate moment captured.

I wanted to utilize the brick in the building so we took these fairly quickly. This one is my favorite.

I used one of our walls in the studio for this one. Can I just say, ALL BABY?
